You are currently viewing dearest great aunt Zelda,

dearest great aunt Zelda,

i saw bands of wild turkeys strut
outside of your wide room window
like mafia bosses of the nursing home yard
huge & dangerous
severely long legs frisky
over the grey stone wall
free of the black-suited feds
& you a raisin in your bed
with bedsores, ankles healing, legs swollen,
& mind alive with a myriad of scenarios
federal agents coming to arrest you
federal agents listening to your shows
federal agents tapping your phone
(which you cannot reach)
feds delivering your remote-control comfort chair
& bugging it

mom thought the nurses were stealing
your nightgowns, floral & oversized
for whom, i asked, really?

here, i watch the boy scouts try &
sell their wares to passersby
those who leave the train
in front of the catholic church:
they hawk their handmade holiday wreaths,
flocks of holly, mistletoe, & christmas trees
unsure, voices crackling, & trained-in-polite
standing in front of 100 white crystal angels
golden trumpets poking at their wire lips
their heads raised
as if to announce:
the feds are coming
the feds are coming
let us bring them
freedom, frankincense,
turkey sandwiches, & myrrh
